MEXICO before Mundial '78

Firstly Mexico had played in CONCACAF North Group with USA and Canada. The rivalisation was very sharp. Each team finaly noted one win, two draws and one lost. Mexico had taken first place in table thinkly better goals balance. They 0:1 lost and 0:0 drew Canada, 0:0 drew and 3:0 won USA (goals: Solis, Alvarez, Davila). Mexico and Canada qualified to final qualification tournament. The 1977 CONCACAF Championship was held in Mexico in October. Mexico, as the host nation, easily secured a third title and a place in Argentina '78 since the tournament also served as qualification to the World Cup. Mexico won all 5 matches: Haiti 4:1 (Sanchez, Rangel 3), Salvador 3:1 (Rangel 2, Cardenas), Suriname 8:1 (Isidoria 2, Jimenez 2, Sanchez 2, Chavez, Rangel), Guatemala 2:1 (Vazquez pen., Cardenas), Canada 3:1 (Guzman 2, Sanchez).

TUNISIA before Mundial '78

In play-off African qualifications Tunisia eliminated: Marocco 1:1 and 1:1 and penalties 4:2, Algieria 2:0 and 1:1, Gwinea 0:1 and 3:1. In final group Tunisia played against Egypt and Nigeria. After home draw against Nigeria 0:0, they suprisly won in Lagos 1:0 (own goal - Godwin Odiye). In Kair Tunisia defeat 2:3 (Ben Aziza, Akid). But in last match in Tunis Tunisia won Egypt 4:1 (Akid, Temine, Ben Aziza, Labidi). It was enough to win first place in final group and qualify to Argentinian Mundial '78.
