Austria has qualified from European Group 3 (meet DDR, Turkey and Malta). At the begining Austria won three important matches: Matla away 1:0 (Krankl), Turkey home 1:0 (Schachner) and Malta home 9:0 (6 goals of Krankl!). Two draws 1:1 (home and away) against DDR were in this situation good results. It was enough to win away against Turkey to be in table 1 point ahad of DDR and qualify to Argentinian Mundial. And Austrians did it 1:0 (Prohaska 72').
